We Can Do Better

Last night, Demi Lovato spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on an off-day from her Future Now Tour with Nick Jonas. She delivered a two-minute speech followed by a live performance of her hit single, “Confident.” This song is the title track of her most recent album and it can also be heard in the background of commercials aired by ABC, promoting their coverage of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

Demi Lovato’s speech regarded mental healthcare in the United States, which is a controversial issue in our nation’s capitol. Demi addressed that many Americans are unable to seek treatment for mental healthcare due to finance or negative stigmas. The Affordable Care Act, deemed “Obamacare,” is the largest expansion of mental healthcare and substance abuse treatment in United States history. The Affordable Care Act requires most health insurance firms to offer plans covering mental health services. An important part of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s platform is defending and expanding the Affordable Care Act.

At the DNC, Lovato shared her personal story and expressed gratitude that she was able to access treatment at a top facility. She believes all people living with mental health conditions should have access to the same resources as her. Lovato exclaimed that Hillary is the candidate that will fight to ensure that mental healthcare is accessible for all Americans. Demi Lovato has been a longtime supporter of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Lovato even made an appearance at a Clinton campaign rally in January. She has also appeared at the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency to perform and advocate for mental health.

Demi Lovato is a celebrity who is not afraid to discuss politics and endorse a presidential candidate. She is courageous and confident. She has made massive strides towards mental health advocacy. She even decided to bring her treatment facility, Cast Centers, on tour with her for intimate sessions with fans before every show. I had the privilege of attending two of these sessions. Demi Lovato is the hero we all need. My gratitude towards her is infinite.
